| Physical Description | To most people, Drell appears to be an average human male in his mid- to late-thirties. Nothing about his physical appearance would seem to indicate he is, in fact, much older. His blue-gray eyes sparkle with a daring curiosity and a fierce confidence borne from years of experience. Yet, for all their warmth, there is a hint of shadow as if he knows more than he lets on. A few residual scars serve as faded reminders of lessons long past. Altogether, his physical presence gives him an appearance of a strong leader who is not so distant as to be out-of-reach. |

| Strengths & Weaknesses | Those who know Drell best would argue his greatest strength both personally and professionally has been his compassion for others. Not only has it driven him to help those in need, it has also allowed him to draw out the best in others and contributed greatly to his success as a leader. This has been well complimented by a natural sense of curiosity and a consistent willingness to consider ideas, perspectives, and opinions that are different from his own. Despite strong interpersonal skills and years of experience interacting with others, however, Drell remains a rather private individual. He believes very strongly that good things can be achieved, even when it does not always seem likely. Because of this, he tends to focus on things as they could or should be rather than settling for things as they are. Being able to take this longer, more optimistic view of history has served him well on many occasions, but has also made him appear naïve or idealistic at times. |

| Ambitions & Goals | Drell has dedicated much of his life to helping others. A lifetime of working to provide relief, support, and advocacy eventually led him to join Starfleet shortly after the Battle of Wolf 359 when he realized he needed to take a more active role in helping his adopted people explore the stars. Although he has never sought advancement for its own sake, Drell has managed to move steadily upward through the ranks by continually demonstrating strong qualities of leadership. He remains open to whatever the future may hold as far as his career and vocation are concerned. When it comes to his own personal development, Drell has focused largely on trying to reconnect. He has spent the past century since learning of his people’s fate trying to find out what happened to the members of his family. Thus far, he’s been largely unsuccessful, but continues to keep an ear out for anything that might point him in the right direction. Drell is also keenly aware that finding a partner with whom he can share an intimate relationship might prove more fulfilling, though his longevity and life experience have made that difficult. |

| Personal History | Aviram Drell was born on December 29, 1811 at a community medical center on El-Auria. His parents, Reuven and Mora, were both cultural scientists who specialized in the history of socio-political interactions among species. They were particularly interested in how the patterns of those interactions could potentially be used to predict the behavior and development of emerging civilizations. The work done by Drell’s parents meant that they frequently travelled off-world for years at a time. Rather than leave their children behind, Reuven and Mora chose to bring Drell and his sister along with them. Such adventures likely encouraged Drell’s already vibrant curiosity as well as gave him an appreciation of individuals and cultures other than his own. In fact, by the time Drell reached the age of maturity, he had visited several different worlds with his parents and had completed his initial academic studies in cultural science. Drell and his sister, Zhanii, arrived on Earth in early 1923 after having heard stories of the relatively young species that was emerging there. They took on human identities, doing their best to blend in with those around them, and observed as humanity went through economic depression, international war, and the post-war developments that followed. What Drell witnessed in that relatively short amount of time both amazed and confused him. Despite having experienced the trauma and violence of these worldwide events, many seemed even more determined to press forward and to craft a better future for those who would come after them. When Zhanii left Earth in 1968, Drell chose to stay behind and continue his observation. He wasn’t so much interested in the technological advancements that were sending humans into space, though, as he was in trying to figure out what made the human spirit so robust and enduring. He wanted to know what made it possible for people to keep moving forward like this, especially after having repeatedly experienced such personal and societal trauma. The next several decades saw Drell traveling the world, visiting various places and immersing himself in different communities, often for years at a time. This allowed him to really hear people’s stories and to get a sense of what grounded them. His search brought him into contact with philosophers and theologians, academics and laborers, urban city-dwellers and those whose families had lived for generations in more rural areas. Each broadened Drell’s awareness of how people interpreted the human experience differently and how those interpretations influenced the way they lived their lives. Living as an alien among humans was not without its dangers, however. Human society continued to advance at a rapid pace, making it harder and harder to keep from attracting unwanted attention. There were certainly a few close calls that made Drell wonder whether he might have been pushing his luck. Perhaps the most difficult period was the years leading up to and immediately following the Third World War as movements advocating for racial purity once again seized power. This ultimately forced Drell away from those areas of strong governmental control into regions more sparsely populated where his presence was less likely to be scrutinized. Drell spent several decades after these events living on the margins while still managing to keep one eye on how things were developing. He was almost as surprised as anyone else when Zephram Cochrane broke the warp speed barrier. He observed from afar how first contact with the Vulcans gave humanity a chance to reclaim the better parts of their nature. He watched, along with others, as human beings left their own solar system and began exploring the regions beyond. Despite all this, however, Drell chose not to come forward or take part in these bold new initiatives. Wisdom borne of experience told him to wait. Instead, he kept his focus on things that were happening closer to the ground and on the ways he could continue helping others right where he was. The founding of the Federation in 2161 marked a significant turning point. As important a development as it was for humanity, it proved to have a surprisingly personal impact on Drell as well. This new union meant he no longer had to fear being discovered as an alien living among humans. He would only have been one among many. It meant that he could come in from the margins and study more openly without having to be concerned for his own safety. Yet, at the same time, it also forced him to question what his own role could (or even should) be moving forward. |
Career History
| Pre-Starfleet Career | By the end of the twenty-second century, Drell had become more comfortable living as his authentic self, at least insofar as was practical. He participated in the Interspecies Medical Exchange based on his more recent training in the field of counseling where he learned about the various psychological impacts of interspecies relationships on individuals as well as communities. Drell also appreciated the opportunity the exchange offered for him to share at least some of his own story with others. The connections he made through that experience confirmed his talents for professional counseling and led to a renewed involvement with refugee resettlement. Drell served with several non-governmental organizations throughout much of the early twenty-third century before accepting a position with the Federation Displaced Persons Agency in 2256. This coincided with the outbreak of hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire that resulted from the Battle of the Binary Stars. Rather quickly, it was discovered he had talent for reaching people others found difficult to understand and he was often called in to work with unaccompanied children and young adults. He was notably not involved with handling the case of the El-Aurian refugees rescued by the USS Enterprise-B in 2293. In fact, by the time news of the rescue reached him, the survivors had already been released and their records sealed. Drell eventually opened his own personal investigation in the hopes of discovering what happened to his people. Working with the Displaced Persons Agency revealed many legal and diplomatic issues that presented significant hurdles for those fleeing violence, disaster, or economic depression on their homeworlds. Drell eventually left the agency to serve as a policy advisor within the Federation Department of the Exterior. His experience allowed him to offer valuable insight when it came to helping improve the Federation’s ability to care for refugees and migrants. It was also around this time that Drell finally pieced together what had caused his people to become refugees, though he still did not know the fate of his own family. That lack of knowledge would continue to haunt him and eventually spur him to action. |

| Starfleet Training | Drell was one of thousands who applied to join Starfleet following the Borg Incursion of 2366-2367. Knowing there would likely be competition, he intentionally submitted his application to multiple locations including the campuses on Earth, Deneva, and Betazed. He soon received word that he had been accepted to the Sociology and Xenology programs at the primary Starfleet Academy campus in San Francisco beginning in the fall of that year. During his time at the Academy, Drell completed two year-long field assignments. The first was an enlisted tour as part of the science department aboard the New Orleans-class USS Bhutto from July 2369 thru June 2370. His time aboard the Bhutto reminded him of the years he’d spent living among various small towns and villages where each day brought its own unique opportunities and challenges. In addition to his basic duties of collecting and analyzing mission data, Drell was expected to spend time learning the fundamentals of shipboard life while training alongside enlisted personnel. One challenge he faced was navigating the complex traditions and relationships among officers and enlisted personnel that sometimes felt as if they made it more difficult for people to serve together. In the end, however, he came away with a greater appreciation of the important role enlisted personnel play within the Starfleet service. The second field assignment Drell served was an officer tour as part of the counseling department aboard the Olympic-class USS Hope from July 2370 thru June 2371. Unlike his previous assignment, the goal here was more focused on putting the theory of his specific field of study to practical application. He spent some time observing the operating theater, working with recovering patients in the ward, assisting with the emergency response teams, and participating in counseling sessions. Drell also made an intentional effort to reach out to members of other departments aboard ship and to get a better sense of their experiences where he could. |
