Protocol Description

Protocol 121 (Section A)

Authority of the
Chief Medical Officer

- A Chief Medical Officer may require a full examination of any crew member, including the Commanding Officer, whose state of well-being is determined to be in question.

- The Chief Medical Officer has the power to relieve an officer or crewman of his or her duties (including one of superior rank) if, in the Chief Medical Officer's professional judgment, the individual is medically unfit, compromised by an alien intelligence, or otherwise exhibits behavior that indicates seriously impaired judgment. A Starfleet officer can face court martial for failing to submit to such a relief.

Protocol 121 (Section B)

Doctor-Patient Care

- Any officer or crewman taking medical leave may select a rehabilitation facility of their choosing.

- The transport of any patient is to be performed at the discretion of his or her attending physician.

- No officer may order a physician to violate doctor-patient confidentiality except in situations where it has been determined the maintaining of such confidentiality presents a risk to starship, facility, or other planetary installation.

Protocol 121 (Section C)

Proper Medical Procedure

- Any officer, crewman, or civilian serving as research personnel on alien planets are required to have their health certified by a starship or starbase physician at one year intervals.

- All Starfleet personnel must obtain authorization from their Commanding Officer as well as clearance from their Chief Medical Officer before initiating an intimate relationship with an alien species.

- Nothing shall be beamed aboard until danger of contamination has been eliminated. Beaming down to the surface of a planet is permitted if the Commanding Officer decides the mission is vital and reasonably free of danger.

- When responding to a medical emergency on alien terrain or beaming down to the surface of a planet where there is suspected risk of emergency, away team members are required to keep an open channel of communication at all times.
