Starfleet Uniforms (2373)

Created by Captain Aviram Drell on Tue Aug 6th, 2019 @ 1:04am

Overview

Starfleet uniforms are uniforms worn by individuals serving in the Federation Starfleet. These uniforms are designed for comfort even in the most extreme environments. They facilitate the wearers’ needs as both scientists and researchers as well as Starfleet’s military role. All personnel are expected to abide by Starfleet dress code, though special exceptions are sometimes made for certain aspects of an individual’s cultural heritage.

Note: This article pertains to the former iteration of the Starfleet uniform which was discontinued in 2393. For information about the current Starfleet uniform, visit Uniforms & Uniform Code (2393).

Division Colors

Starfleet uniforms are generally broken down by color among the primary operating divisions and occasionally by department. These division and departmental colors have varied over time, but are consistent across the Federation Starfleet.

  • Red indicates an individual is a member of the Command, Tactical, or Flight Operations department. Such individuals specialize in command and control functions aboard starships, stations, and installations. They are trained in leadership as well as tactical operations, allowing them to decisively take action in organizing and mobilizing to perform missions.
  • Gold indicates an individual is a member of the Engineering, Operations, or Security department. Individuals serving in either engineering or operations specialize in maintaining the functionality and operational status aboard starships, stations, and installations. Individuals serving in security are responsible for safeguarding from internal and external threats.
  • Teal indicates an individual is a member of the Science, Medical, or Counseling department. Individuals serving in science have the broad responsibility of observing, theorizing, and conducting experiments related to Starfleet’s overall mission of exploration. Individuals in medical or counseling specialize in treating and maintaining the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of others.
  • Note: For the purposes of this simulation, the color white indicates an individual who is a civilian or otherwise not a member of the Federation Starfleet. This may include civilian residents, specialists, or diplomats living and working aboard a starship, starbase, or planetary installation.
Duty Uniforms

Standard Duty Uniform (introduced cir. 2373)

The former standard duty uniform was first introduced in 2373 along with several other Starfleet uniforms based upon this design. It consists of black boots, trousers, and a black jacket with quilted gray shoulders worn over a division-colored shirt. Stripes around the cuff of each sleeve also bear the distinctive division color. Rank pips are situated on the right side of the raised collar. A Starfleet insignia (which doubles as a combadge) is worn on the left breast. This uniform is worn whenever an individual is on duty unless otherwise specified.

The flag officer uniform is similar to the standard duty uniform in many respects. As on previous versions, a gold-trimmed closure runs down the front of the uniform jacket. The colored stripes around the cuff of each sleeve are wider and display the admiral’s rank. Finally, a belt is worn around the waist and fastened with an oval buckle displaying the seal of the United Federation of Planets. This uniform is worn whenever a flag officer is on duty unless otherwise specified.

Cadet Duty Uniform (introduced cir. 2373)

The cadet uniform is based on the standard uniform design with a few notable differences. It consists of gray trousers featuring several pockets and a gray jacket with quilted, division-colored shoulders worn over a gray shirt. Stripes around the cuff of each sleeve also bear the distinctive division color. Cadet rank pips are situated on the right side of the raised collar. A Starfleet insignia (which doubles as a combadge) is worn on the left breast. This uniform is worn whenever a cadet is on duty unless otherwise specified.

Additional Uniforms (“Variants”)

"Variant" Uniforms (introduced cir. 2373)

In addition to the standard duty uniform, there are a number of special purpose uniforms available to different individuals depending upon their rank, department, and work environment.

The command “variant” uniform consists of the same black boots and trousers as the standard duty uniform. However, it exchanges the standard duty jacket for a sleeveless, low-necked vest with quilted gray shoulders that extend further below the combadge. This variant may be worn by commanding officers during normal duty operations.

The utility “variant” uniform consists of a plain, mustard-colored jumpsuit featuring several pockets. It is designed for personnel who serve in fields or contexts that demand a more utilitarian outfit (e.g. engineering). This variant may be worn by individuals while performing maintenance operations.

The combat “variant” uniform consists of black trousers and a black jacket with a single division-colored line running across the upper chest. It is made of a harder, more durable substance than standard duty uniforms to provide added protection against bodily harm. This variant may be worn by individuals while performing hazardous battle operations (i.e. ground combat).

The desert “variant” uniform consists of off-white hooded robes, pants, and short-sleeved shirts all trimmed with division colors. It is designed to provide added protection for personnel in harsher conditions where the standard duty uniform may prove uncomfortable or inappropriate. This variant may be worn during away missions and other excursions.

The excursion “variant” uniform consists of a tight-fitting jumpsuit made of a metallic-silver material with a single division-colored line running across the upper chest. It is designed to allow for more taxing physical activity and is most often used when operating environmental suits. This variant may be worn during away missions and other excursions.

The training “variant” uniform consists of a gray, short-sleeved jumpsuit with a single division-colored line running across the upper chest. It is most often used in situations where physical activity warrants something less confining and more flexible. This variant may be worn during routine physical training exercises.

Dress Uniforms

Jumpsuit “Variant” Duty Uniform (introduced cir. 2390)

Dress uniforms are the most formal Starfleet uniform. They are worn for special occasions such as official ceremonies, funerals, weddings, the greeting of ambassadorial delegations and heads of state, as well as other functions where more formal attire is required.

The officers’ dress uniform consists of black boots, trousers, and a white jacket with gold trim. A quilted, blue-gray center section distinguishes them from captains and flag officers. Division colors appear as piping around the collar, wide bands around the cuffs, and stripes along the side seams of the trousers.

The captains’ dress uniform and flag officers’ dress uniform are nearly identical to the officers’ dress uniform with a few notable exceptions. Both captains and flag officers have a white center section in place of the typical blue-gray. Additionally, flag officers have a wider cuff braid with a solid white line running through it upon which rank insignia is affixed.

The enlisted dress uniform and non-commissioned dress uniform consist of black boots, trousers, and a gray jacket with white trim. A white band running along the collar provides space upon which rank insignia is affixed.
