Managing Medical

Mission: Episode 05: "Deep Water"
Timeline: Day 1 at 0000

The new assignment for the Vesta had meant that there had been an influx of new crew members. It was understandable, not everyone wanted to commit to such a intense mission, especially given the uncertainty of the whole situation. She was lucky, the lack of ties on Earth meant she had no one to stay for, but deep down a small part of her envied those that had ties strong enough to keep them in the Alpha Quadrant.

One of the new crew members was Commander Sorek, the new Chief Medical Officer. Until now, Temperance hadn't had a chance to get to medical, but with departure looming, she wanted to take a moment to make sure that the new doctor had settled in and had everything he needed to keep Medical ticking through the mission ahead.

While Sorek was in his office, he was actually looking over a list of plants on the large display screen, comparing it to data on his PADD and on the desk terminal. It looked like he was taking stock of what Hydroponics was working with and what could be used in a medicinal role.

He looked up from his work at the new arrival, standing a bit straighter and nodded slightly in a greeting gesture.

"Commander. Welcome. How may I be of assistance?" Sorek said, his tone neutral but respectful, no sign that he appeared to be interrupted.

"Commander Sorek," Temperance smiled again. "I apologise I haven't gotten to you sooner, preparation for this upcoming mission has kept us running ragged trying to make sure everything is prepared. But, regardless, I wanted to make sure that you were settling in and that you have everything you need before we depart."

"No apology needed, Commander. The Vesta is preparing for a significant undertaking. I assumed we would speak when time permitted." Sorek replied, "Overall, Medical appears to be in acceptable condition, Sickbay is stocked and fully operational. I confess I am not accustomed to such pristine surroundings. Many of my previous postings had less prepared surroundings."

"Is there anything specific I should otherwise address? I prefer open professional working environments, a free exchange of ideas and concerns allows for a more efficient and effective environment." Sorek clasped his hands behind his back.

"The ship is state of the art, probably a good thing given our intended mission," Temperance relaxed slightly, leaning against the frame of the door. "At this stage, I suspect everything everything to be good and our departure to be without issue." She paused for a moment. "Have you ever done any deep space or long range travels Commander?"

"No to either. My first two postings were on second-line vessels operating within Federation space. My most recent before Vesta was more on the frontier but still in Federation space. This will be a number of firsts for me." Sorek admitted, "While there is certainly the unknown to consider, I believe adequate preparation and an open mind will help overcome that trepidation. I may not experience it like Humans, but I assure you, the best adjective to describe my current state would be "excited"."

Temperance nodded slightly. "We've received some helpful information from Starfleet Medical in regards to things to look out for. Not everyone can handle deep space and isolation, so we'll have to make sure we're especially attentive to the crew, regular checkups, make sure that if there are any issues we're on top of them as quickly as possible."

"We have a suitable team for that purpose as well." Sorek nodded in agreement, "Mental health is of equal importance as physical. I believe this will be a combined effort across the ship, supporting one another. This is a journey that is not in the bounds of...normal for any Starfleet crew. Even exploration missions tend to still happen near Federation space."

Temperance smiled softly. It seemed, at least to outward appearances, despite an external lack of what some may consider a warm bedside manner, it seemed that medical was in competent hands. "I would suggest a quick review of medical files before we leave, look for any red flags, any immediate signs of issues before we depart. We're down to the wire, if we can cut off any problems before they arise, it would be preferential. Other than that, I assume medical is ready for departure and I can cross you off my list"

"That has been a consideration for the counseling team - I believe Lieutenant Vodaan is handling the matter most capably. He is aware that should my assistance be required, I am available." Sorek replied, "I prefer not to...micromanage. It impedes efficiency and disrupts a positive working environment. An open door policy and maintaining cordial relations generates better results in the long term."

"Otherwise, your assumption is correct. I look forward to our endeavors as a crew." He concluded.

Temperance nodded. "Excellent, well, you have things in hand so I see no need to take up more of your time. Thank you Commander, I appreciate your hospitality. If you need nothing else from me I'll leave you to your department."

"Very well. Thank you for stopping by. I look forward to a fruitful journey. Perhaps we will also keep incidents down to a minimum as well. But if not, Medical will be ready." Sorek replied.
