The situation room was dark. Horis stood alone at one end of the master display table, arms crossed and brow furrowed. She watched in silence as a holographic image of the Vesta rotated slowly just above the table's surface. Several areas of the ship were still highlighted with various shades of red, orange, and yellow, evidence that efforts to repair the damage from their close encounter with a warp core breach were still ongoing.
Like many who were below decks when it happened, the explosion had initially caught her off guard. The ache in her side where she'd been thrown against the edge of a storage locker was a fading reminder of how quickly it had all gone down. Now they were on the mend, but left with more questions than answers, as so often was the case in their line of work.
Pain was something not unfamiliar to the Caitian however with that came a more acute awareness of injury since given his size and considerable weight, bone injuries could happen not just easily from as simple as a fall but could be crippling to the natural predator. Hardly the ideal start of his new assignment but nobody said wearing green would be easy, or glamorous.
Walking to the table he saw the ship and its colour coded sections that denoted damage of various stages but first he needed to know the status of his department. "Casualties?" He asked the female known to him as 1st Lt Horis, his Exec.
"None among the detachment, colonel."
"Very well." Looking at the display of the ship and its damaged sections it was not hard to guage that things were certainly interesting.
"As far as I know," Horis said, "no casualties reported anywhere."
"I'd like to assist with repairs, prepare two squads of combat engineers, have them report to Engineering. They may not be able to conduct complex repairs but the most simple ones will free up more skilled engineering staff for other things." At least as he saw it, he had people with talent, idle talent was wasted talent.
"Of course," Horis replied. The decision made sense, seeing as they had the personnel to spare. this was part of the reason why they spent so much time making sure their people were cross-trained in different areas. It also reaffirmed that they were willing to work side-by-side with the ship's crew to get the job done. Horis was glad that, in this matter at least, she and the colonel seemed to be of the same mind. Somehow, she doubted Captain Drell would have agreed to the posting had that not been the case.
A moment passed in silence. Despite the information that had just been exchanged, neither casualty reports nor repairs to the ship itself were foremost on Horis' mind. She uncrossed her arms, reached down, and lifted a PADD from the table's surface. One simple report was visible on its display. Horis glanced over it briefly, then turned the PADD around so that Mr'isarr could take it from her.
"The latest from sickbay," she told him, "Sounds like security has everything under control as far as our 'guest' is concerned."
"You have been on board longer than I by a considerable degree." Mr'isarr spoke. "How has the working relationship between the marines and other departments faired?" Leading a department was one thing, leading it in efforts jointly with other departments was another and if he was to do that he needed to know what history there was, issues, problems, successes.
Horis considered the question a moment. "Captain Drell has always insisted on a collaborative model," she replied, "for every department, not just the detachment. I have noticed, however, figuring out what that means when it comes to working with marines has been more difficult for some than for others. Our biggest challenge is almost always when new transfers in. It takes a little while for them to get used to the way things work around here. Still, most of the senior staff since I've come aboard have been fairly willing to cooperate."
It was no new thing for Mr'isarr to hear that others with difficulties or issues when dealing with marines, marines were trained differently, did things differently and some had issues with that. "I see." Realising that perhaps that was a subtle hint that he, was the 'new transfer in'. "Recommendations?"
It never hurt to ask for input, suggestions, thoughts or comments as they could be used to refine a plan of action, or in this case, his own settling in.
"Keep the door open, colonel," Horis told him, "Meet with the other department heads and don't be afraid to invite yourself to the party if you have to. Most of them aren't trying to box us out. They just don't think to include us because they don't realize how we can be of help."
